If lights dim every time the kettle, shower, or a large appliance switches on, that’s usually a sign the circuit is under more strain than it’s designed for, which is common in older homes that have had extra appliances added over the years without the wiring being upgraded to match. Flickering that happens with no obvious trigger, at random times of day, is more likely to point to a loose connection somewhere in the circuit, which can worsen over time if left unchecked.

If different circuits trip at different times with no clear link between them, that can point to an issue with the board itself rather than any one appliance. Either way, repeated tripping is your electrics telling you something isn’t right, and it’s worth having looked at rather than simply resetting the switch each time.
3. Warm or Discoloured Sockets and Switches
Sockets and switches should never feel warm to the touch. Warmth, discolouration, or a slightly melted look around the plate is a sign of a poor connection generating heat, and it’s one of the more serious warning signs on this list.
This is often caused by a loose terminal connection inside the socket, which creates resistance and heat every time current passes through it. Left alone, this can get progressively worse, and in some cases lead to arcing or fire. It’s also worth checking sockets behind furniture or in less-used rooms occasionally, since a problem here can go unnoticed for a long time simply because nobody’s touching that socket day to day.
4. Burning Smell With No Obvious Source
A burning or plasticky smell with nothing visibly burning is one of the clearest signs of an electrical fault and shouldn’t be ignored. Turn off the affected circuit at the board if it’s safe to do so, and get it checked urgently.
This smell is usually caused by insulation on a cable or component overheating, and it’s one of the few warning signs on this list that I’d treat as a same-day issue rather than something to book in for later in the week. Sockets, switches, or the fuse board itself should be silent. Buzzing, crackling, or humming noises usually mean a loose connection or arcing, both of which are fire risks.
A faint hum from the fuse board area that’s always been there and hasn’t changed is less concerning than a new or intermittent crackling sound, particularly if it comes from a specific socket or switch. If you can hear it clearly without putting your ear right up to the fitting, that’s usually a sign it’s worth having checked sooner rather than later.
6. Scorch Marks Around Sockets or the Fuse Board
Any visible scorching, even minor, means an electrical fault has already occurred. This needs immediate attention rather than monitoring.
Scorching is evidence that heat has already built up to a dangerous level at some point, even if the socket or board appears to be working normally now. It doesn’t mean the fault is ongoing, but it does mean the underlying cause hasn’t necessarily been fixed, so the same thing can happen again. This is one to get checked rather than simply cover up with a new faceplate.
7. An Old Fuse Board With Rewireable Fuses
If your board still uses fuse wire, or looks like it hasn’t been updated in decades, it’s unlikely to offer the level of protection modern RCD and RCBO protected boards provide. This isn’t a fault in itself, but it’s a strong indicator the whole installation may be due an inspection.

If you’re not sure which circuit controls which part of the house, or your fuse board isn’t clearly labelled, it’s safest to avoid using the affected area altogether and call for advice rather than guessing. Most of these warning signs are more urgent in combination than on their own. A slightly warm socket alongside a burning smell, for example, is more concerning than either sign in isolation.

A lot of the warning signs above show up more frequently in period and older homes, simply because the wiring was designed for a much lower level of electrical demand than modern households place on it.
